Job Title: Application Database Administrator (DBA) - weather.com

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The application database administrator will be responsible for implementing the models created by the Database Architect, communicating the resulting schema and any approved access methods to application developers, and working with The Weather Channel’s DBA group to optimize and maintain the databases according to design specs.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Working within project teams to implement and maintain product and application access to databases.
- Creating tables, indices, triggers and stored procedures according to documented business rules.
- Working closely with the Database Architect to implement predetermined strategies for replication, indexing, and optimization.
- Working with outside technology companies to evaluate new technologies and products, and integrate those technologies or products into the weather.com databases.
- Help design procedures to convert legacy systems to Oracle
QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge/ Skills/ Education):
- Knowledge
- BS in computer science or similar field.
- 1 – 2 years experience with SQL, PL/SQL, Oracle 8/8i.
- Familiarity with data modeling.
- Ability to solve problems of high complexity.
- Skills
- Must have experience building database-oriented web site.
- Must have experience with designing and implementing on-line content, applications, and/or web sites.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must mentor developers through difficult aspects of database integration.
- Capable of operating in multiple OSs: primary: Solaris, NT; secondary: Linux, BSD-variants
- Expertise in SQL database access techniques.
- Experience developing for a Sun/Netscape web server platform.
- Fluent in PL/SQL, SQL, Java, Perl, stored procedures, ODBC, JDBC.
- Experience using an Oracle backend database from web-based applications
- Knowledge and understanding of commercial on-line services.
- Experience working on a large-scale production web site.
