Job Title: Associate Director, Core Weather Components - weather.com

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Associate Director, Core Weather Components is responsible for coordination with the weather.com IT team for the ingest of raw weather data, and for preparing that data for use by the various product teams. Working with The Weather Channel Meteorology Team, as well as the IT organizations for both companies, the Associate Director will manage both Project Managers and Meteorologists to ensure that systems are in place to support content projects identified by Product Teams. This individual will be responsible for the monitoring of the marketplace in terms of competition and trends, with the ability to translate this knowledge into a meaningful user experience. The Associate Director, Core Weather Components will be responsible for the management of costs associated with the products developed by the team, and the ability to understand and weigh benefits, to perform costs analysis and achieve overall goals. In addition to a deep understanding of consumer attitudes and culture of the web, this individual must have a strong understanding of both meteorology and the information systems that support this science.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage a diverse group of professionals, including project managers and meteorologists, to develop weather components for use by all product teams.

Perform competitive and marketplace analyses to assess trends and guide team to create compelling products.

Work closely with the IT organizations within weather.com and The Weather Channel to create optimal ingest of weather data.

Where appropriate, source, negotiate, and implement the ingest of non-traditional weather data.

Ensure the weather.com on-line efforts enhance user experiences and support business strategies, consistent with predetermined guidelines.

Design budgets, establish priorities, and allocate departmental resources.

Hire, train, and coach staff within the context of the company’s philosophy of continuous improvement.

 

QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge/ Skills/ Education):

Minimum 7 years successful business experience managing professionals in performing scientific processes, as well as implementations of complex technology systems to support these processes; minimum 3 years in the on-line environment; professional meteorology experience a must.

Deep understanding of web culture and consumers.

Proven success in hiring, developing, and managing creative teams.

Graduate Meteorology degree preferred, undergraduate degree in this or other relevant field required.

Deep understanding of meteorology and its underlying systems is critical.

Strong knowledge of technology as it supports the science of meteorology and ability to assess technology requirements.

Strong research, analysis, development, and project management skills with the ability to manage complex projects and diverse teams.

Excellent problem solving and analytical skills with an orientation towards developing win-win solutions.

A broad, strategic orientation with an extreme attention to detail.

Experience managing informational and technology focused teams, with a proven track record in the creation of employee development.

Strong ability to organize information based on analysis of marketplace and user feedback, particularly in the online environment.

Strong communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to represent weather.com strategies and objectives both internally and externally.

Ability to manage budgets, perform cost analyses, and identify and implement cost efficiencies where appropriate.

Ability to manage a diverse workload and assign priorities to tasks, effectively directing the activities of others.

Ability to establish processes to ensure success of cross-functional teams and manage product development to ensure a positive customer experience.
