JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Development Manager will guide the design, development, implementation and support of The Weather Channel applications. Should be team focused and highly motivated.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Contribute at all levels of the software product development cycle for new client applications.
- Work with internal customers to determine project requirements, and translate those requirements into development tasks.
- Assist in the project management with accurate task estimates and group design efforts. Manage the allocation of resources to specific tasks and ensure they stay on track.
- Ensure that departmental standards for design, documentation and development are met on all projects. Manage the ongoing development and documentation of departmental standards.
- Ensure that documentation on all projects and systems is complete and accurate.
- Assist with ongoing support of products, including troubleshooting.
- Recruit, develop and retain a professional staff.
- Maintain relationships with technology vendors, consultants, and others to identify and evaluate best practices and new standards, technologies and tools.
QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge/ Skills/ Education):
Knowledge
- Systems architecture
- Application development tools and methodologies. Primary focus in client/server application development, with some web applications.
- Hands-on experience with both structured and object-oriented programming, specifically C, C++. Java is a plus.
- Unix (Solaris)
- Experience with Oracle database development, including Pro*C, PL/SQL
- Use of CM tools, including Clear Case
- Any experience with broadcast, cable television or satellite technology is a plus.
- Experience with graphics and/or audio transmission, including compression, file format conversion, etc.
Skills
- Finding creative solutions to development issues. Problem solving skills as well as flexibility and the ability to gather a variety of inputs and help the group find the best option.
- Team building skills, the ability to motivate a team of software engineers.
- Resource management and allocation. Ability to appropriately assign tasks to team members, provide accurate task breakdowns and time estimates, and work with Project Managers to keep projects on track.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills. Must work well with members of other teams and with internal customers to ensure their needs are met. Customer service focus.
- Documentation, including data flow and process flow diagrams, architecture, hardware, network and related documentation.
- Ability to learn quickly
- Ability to keep the "big-picture" in mind to ensure that project development is done in agreement with long and short-term goals and objectives.
